Depth Psychology is an interdisciplinary field that draws upon on literature, philosophy, mythology, and the arts, as well as the pioneering insights from the great clinicians such as Carl Jung, Sigmund Freud, Marianne Woodman, James Hillman, Joseph Campbell, and Marie Louise von Franz, to better understand the dynamics of the unconscious. By studying dreams, symbols, meaningful coincidences ("synchronicities"), and the ancient tales humanity has preciously preserved through the eons, depth psychologists seek a language of psyche and soul that is all-encompassing and informed by the ages. Transformations in consciousness follow the integration of material that has been repressed or rejected, and examined in the light of the conscious ego. Depth psychologists view life as an act of poetry ("poesis") that can be shaped and molded like potter's clay with craft and intention, rather than a determined force one must endure.
